Hairy House

A house extension that provides a new kitchen, dining area and family space to an end-of-terrace Victorian House in Hammersmith, west London.

Hairy House sets out to playfully challenge the existing house’s Victorian order. The twisted staircase, the lowered floor, the angled plan and the raking ceiling open up a sequence of carefully-controlled spatial relationships with the existing house. The building is clad in Welsh Slate and has an internal-external timber lining that weaves around the awkwardly-shaped plot – thinning, thickening and twisting to create spaces with differing scales of intimacy that provide spaces fit for modern family life.
