We were appointed to design a number of small building projects for the school that including the design of a new front entrance and display area to show off the work produced by the children. The design accommodates the difference in height between the two teaching blocks with the introduction of an accessible ramp on the edge of the new building with a brickwork island in the centre of the entrance.
The brickwork island re-uses the bricks from a store room that was demolished to make way for the new entrance. This allows different levels for sitting, storing and placing of objects. The module width of the glazing design echoes the rhythm set out by the mullion width on the Victorian building that is also replicated in the width of the windows in the 1970s block. The new entrance provides a shop-front for education.
